When I was in my last year of High School, I won the first prize in a short story contest that our Spanish teacher, Miss Candelaria, had promoted. It wasn’t an extreme surprise to me, because from many years back I already enjoyed to write short stories, and was an avid reader of whatever novel or stories collection I encountered in front of me.

During that time, I wanted to be a writer. I belief this is a natural development pattern as the teeth changes, the appearance of hair in the body, or the strongly manly voice. All child that enjoy to read want to be a writer. That doesn’t mean that he or she will end writing novels, short stories or poetry.

I depart from my own theories. I’m a patterns, or regularities, miner in every discipline I touch. The literature is one of those fields. In my other life, I tried to «define» the qualities of any Hispanic American national speech. The speech that tells about us as something different, and traces a path to the greatness. It’s a speech inclined to the human development. «Ariel», by José Enrique Rodó, «La raza cósmica» by José Vasconcelos, the Simon Bolivar’s speeches, or the «Facundo» by Domingo F. Sarmiento, tell in some way, and under very particular perspectives, the theme of civilization versus barbarism. In general, all those qualifying terms talk about values.

The axiology (values theory) had been since one of my most recurrent subjects. I distinguish the speech about what is «value» from what is a «being». The values had something objective, while there are bases for humanly tolerable sounds, visions, tastes. I can’t see the sun during a long time, I can’t see the X rays. Neither I can’t tolerate some noises that would exploit my ears. Or, even worst, I can’t taste sulfuric acid. Definitively, there is something objective in values. But, from that initial point, there are a whole span of possibilities. That is under art’s domains. And, in it, there is the literature.

My voice for literature talks in Spanish. During my college years I studied literature and linguistic. I’ve tried during all these years to maintain the tradition of reading some novels and short stories, also poetry. I hope in this zone to draw a little view of my literature concepts. My theories.

The notes that I title by «Teoría de la narración..» will be constantly rewritten. They are my ideas which will be defined in parallel with my meditations over the narrative subject.

(Cuando cursaba mi último año de secundaria gané el certamen al mejor cuento que nuestra maestra de Español de entonces, la Sra. Candelaria, había convocado. No fue extrema mi sorpresa, pues desde mucho tiempo antes disfrutaba de escribir historias y era un ávido lector de cuanta novela y colección de cuentos encontraba a mi paso.

De adolescente quise ser escritor. Creo que es un patrón natural del desarrollo como el cambio de dientes, el aumento de vello en el cuerpo, o el cambio de voz. Todo niño que disfruta de la lectura querrá ser escritor. Aunque no signifique eso que escribirá novelas, cuento o poesía.

Parto de mis propias teorías. Soy un minero de los patrones o regularidades que encuentro en toda disciplina que toco. La literatura es una de ellas. En mi otra vida, intenté «definir» las cualidades de un discurso nacional hispanoamericano. Ese discurso que habla sobre nosotros como algo distinto, y que traza una ruta hacia la grandeza. Es un discurso inclinado al desarrollo del ser humano. El «Ariel» de José Enrique Rodó, «La raza cósmica» de José Vasconcelos, los discursos de Simón Bolivar, o el «Facundo» de Domingo F. Sarmiento, tocan de algún modo, y bajo perspectivas muy particulares, el tema de la civilización y la barbarie. Y en general, todos esos calificativos no son otra cosa que hablar sobre valores.

La axiología (la teoría de los valores) ha sido uno de mis temas recurrentes. Separo el discurso acerca de lo que vale de lo propiamente ontológico. Los valores tienen algo de objetivo, en tanto que hay fundamentos para que un sonido, una visión, un sabor, sean humanamente aceptables. No puedo mirar al sol mucho tiempo, ni ver los rayos X. Tampoco puedo tolerar ciertos sonidos que me estallarían los tímpanos. O, peor aún, degustar el sabor del ácido sulfúrico. En definitiva, hay algo objetivo en los valores. Pero a partir de allí, se abre todo un abanico de posibilidades. Ese es el terreno del arte. Y, dentro de él, la literatura.

Mi voz en ese terreno es castellana. Mis años de bachiller universitario las pasé estudiando literatura y lingüística. Intento cada año continuar con la tradición de leerme algunas novelas y narraciones cortas, también poesía. Espero en estas zonas esbozar algo de mis nociones literarias. Mis teorías.

Las notas que inician con el título de «Teoría de la narración…» estarán en constante cambio. Son ideas cuyo perfil va definiéndose en el transcurso de mis meditaciones respecto al asunto narrativo.)
